Layers are everywhere right now and we’re loving the look. The pile on of jackets and sweaters over one another is a fun alternative to just throwing on that huge puffer coat to stay warm.
But the look can be tricky to pull off and if you do it wrong you will just end up looking like you don’t know how to dress yourself. That’s why we created this tutorial to show you how layering is done.
Look 1: We were inspired by this casual cool layered look that’s great for a relaxed weekend out in Fishtown or Northern Liberties.
Recreating the look:
Step 1: Start with a plain white t-shirt like this bow tee from Zara ($10).
Step 2: Add a close cropped women’s hoodie from your school or favorite band.
Step 3: Throw a black leather jacket over the hoodie.
Step 4: Finish the look with a chunky knit scarf.
Look 2: For our second layered look we were inspired by all of the pattern mixing going on in this outfit. We decided to dress it up a bit for an outfit that can be worn to work.
Step 1: Start with a printed, sleeveless shirt. For this first layer, it’s a goof idea to keep the print simple using a basic pattern like polka dots or stripes.
Step 2: Add a printed sweater that doesn’t clash.
Step 3: Add a jacket or blazer that fits the color palette. In this case, we chose a brown leather bomber jacket.
Add a floral print scarf and a black pencil skirt and you’ve got a layered look that’s still appropriate for work.
Thing to Remember When Layering:
- Anything can be layered: dresses, t-shirts, sweaters, even jackets can be layered over one another.
- Your first few layers should be thin materials.
- Don’t over-layer. Even one jacket too many throws the whole look off.
