I want to let you in on a little secret of mine. I haven’t worn foundation for months. Literally I have not touched my beloved MAC Studio Fix foundation since early July. It’s not because my skin has improved so much that I no longer need it. Quite the contrary in fact. I just have discovered something else that works better than foundation: BB cream.
What is it?
BB cream, short for blemish balm, functions as a moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock all in one. Just like your foundation, it is worn under powder and over a moisturized clean face. It works to give your face a fresh glow and an even tone.
For me, BB cream has completely replaced my foundation. It feels lighter than foundation but provides me with the same amount of coverage with an added bonus of illumination. Since I started wearing BB cream my skin has never looked or felt better. I was skeptical when I first heard about it but it works. Trust me.

A BB Cream Buying Guide
There are many different types of BB Creams and they range in brand, function, and price. The first thing to focus on when buying a BB cream is to get one that matches your skin tone. Remember that they provide foundation coverage so buying one that exactly matches your skin tone is key. Pay attention also to whether or not it has sunblock protection.
I use and love Garnier Fructise Skin Renew BB Cream which is at the low end of the price spectrum at about $12 a bottle. Luxury BB Creams can cost well over $100. Loreal, Clinique, Smashbox, Estee Lauder, and just about every other major cosmetics brand either currently offer or are working on their own BB Cream so my recommendation is to shop around. I went to Sephora and a sales associate was very helpful in pointing me towards some different creams that might work for my skin tone and type and she even gave me some samples to take home and try.
Things to Remember when shopping for a BB Cream:
- Wear it over your daily moisturizer and under your powder (and foundation).
- Buy one that matches your skin tone.
- Shop around: get samples of luxury creams before you spend hundreds of dollars.
- Garnier Fructise Skin Renew BB Cream is a great choice.
