The history of the scarf dates back as far as ancient Rome. I think this would safely qualify it as the most vintage garment in your closet. Although I wouldn’t consider Gladiators haute couture, they were early trendsetters; wearing scarf-like linen garments to wipe their necks and faces. Initially developed as a diverse men’s fashion accessory, the scarf was quickly adopted by women. And boy am I glad ancient women had the sense to start donning the marvelous scarf.
Fast forward a number of centuries, a modern woman like myself has fallen in love with scarves. Absolutely no occasion is off limits to flaunt one. Lucky for me and all of the scarf aficionados out there, my dear friend Monika Suli founded a fun new site where you can shop and find creative ways to wear this delightful neck gear. I am featuring her site because I appreciate how accessible she has made my favorite looks.
As with most great ideas, Monika’s site was born from her passion for scarves. A true fashionista, Monika has traveled the world gathering iconic trends to share with us. For this segment I have chosen some of her prized items. To check out her entire scarf collection, please visit her sassy new site: www.anytimescarf.com
HOW TO WEAR A SCARF:
There is really no wrong way to wear a scarf. You just have to look at three factors: the season, the size of the scarf and the material the scarf is made out of. Since pictures speak louder than words, I put together multiple ways to wear a scarf. With a little imagination and some inspiration from your existing wardrobe, the possibilities are truly endless.
Whether these colors fit your complexion is for you to decide, but a rectangular scarf gives you the most creative liberty to express your personal style.
BAMBOO – “Wear this fabulous grey and blue tie dye scarf and feel special instantly. Your plain, old jeans and T-shirt will benefit from this fashion marriage. Boho-chic has arrived!”
SILK – “This scarf oozes sophistication and elegance. Soft in every way, it is perfect for a day-to-night transition. Versatile and functional, it can also be worn as a headscarf, tied around the waist as a belt, or tied on your favorite purse for a classic Grace Kelly look. The rich brown color mixed with the paisley pattern give this scarf the ultimate must-have status.”
SILK & COTTON MIX – “Show your soft feminine side to the world with this luxe and uber soft square scarf. Silk and cotton have come together in a glorious union to present this eye-catching piece. Who doesn’t love butterflies? This print graduates from black into warm brown and tan hues, allowing the scarf to match almost any outfit. Drape it in front of your neck for a funky hippster look, wear it around your shoulders as a shawl, or use it as a sarong at the beach. Enjoy your butterfly kisses everyday with this functional and elegant scarf.”
Thank you Monika, for bringing so many exciting new fabrics and patterns to our fashionistas. For those of you dreading the cold, get inspired and wrap yourself up in a soft, cozy scarf this winter. But remember, a scarf is a seasonless staple. Wear the light, cool fabrics in the summer and your coveted cashmere pieces during the cooler months.
